Guidelines, Responsibility, Options, and Self-WorthProject GROW is hands-on citizenship education for early elementary students, that can be used in the classroom and other settings. The curriculum targets second, third, and fourth grades; and follows an ecological model of self, family, neighborhood, community, state/country, and world. It teaches children about their role in society, and aims to build self-esteem and develop important skills while teaching basic social studies. Children learn by doing, reflecting, and applying content that is relevant, useful, and focuses on the following life skills and program areas. Life Skills Understanding self, including the differences and similarities in people, individual roles and responsibilities at different levels, and how feelings affect actions. Decision-making, including making changes, learning to plan, choices, and consequences. Social interaction, including exploring attitudes and conflict resolution. Learning to learn, including learning to process, generalize, and apply new information; and writ ten and oral expression. The objectives of Project GROW are to help children: Develop positive feelings of self-worth and role identity. Develop appreciation for the uniqueness in people. Develop decision-making and conflict resolution skills. Explore the concepts of responsibility and respect. Develop a sense of concern for the well-being and property of others. Develop an understanding of vandalism and its consequences. Explore the concepts of rules, laws, government, lawmaking, and law enforcement. Identify the roles and responsibilities of citizens. Develop a positive attitude toward community service. Explore the role and impact of communication. Develop an appreciation of different cultures and a global perspective. Develop a sense of responsibility to protect the environment.
