JMG - Junior Master Gardener Previous list

Junior Master Gardener or JMG
JMG is a program for youth of all ages that uses fun activities to teach horticulture and environmental science concepts. Youth can get involved in exploring their world through activities that encourage: leadership development, personal pride, responsibility, and community involvement. Older youth can be trained to become mentors for younger children participating in the program. Youth involved in the program develop: critical thinking skills, science, reading, math and social studies knowledge, as well as the ability to identify community concerns and take action to address them.

JMG Level I - Grade Level 3-5
JMG Teacher/Leader Guide Level 1
: designed to accompany and correspond to the youth handbook. The teacher/leader guide contains group activities for each teaching concept included in the eight chapters. Topics covered are: Plant Growth and Development, Soils and Water, Ecology and Environmental Horticulture, Insects and Diseases, Landscape Horticulture, Fruits and Nuts, Vegetables and Herbs, Life Skills and Career Exploration.




JMG Youth Handbook Level 1
: contains individual activities designed to enhance the group activities for each chapter. For certification, each youth must complete one individual and one group activity for each teaching concept in the curriculum. In addition, at the end of each chapter is a section entitled "Leadership/Community Service Project."

JMG Health and Nutrition from the Garden: contains individual and group activities for this Golden Ray Series. For certification, each youth must complete one individual and one group activity for each teaching concept in the curriculum, plus one service learning/leadership activity. Topics include: Gardening Basics, Growing Techniques, Thrifty Gardens, Food Safety, ABC's of Healthful Eating, and Healthful Snacks.
