This curriculum is designed to help young people develop into healthy adults by gaining an interest in eating healthy foods, using safe food-handling techniques, and making physical activity part of their lifestyle. This "grab and go" curriculum is designed for students in grades 1-6. Each grade has five lessons relating to the Food Guide Pyramid.

There are five lessons for each grade with the same themes per grade. The subjects are the same: Lesson 1 - The Pyramid ; Lesson 2 - Grains; Lesson 3 - Fruits and Vegetables; Lesson 4 - Milk; and Lesson 5 - Meat. Although the themes are consistent in all grades, the curriculum provides for different and unique classroom activities, physical activities, food safety activities, and take-home handouts for each lesson and grade.

Objectives:

  • Understand that good health is, in part, about the food and activity choices that young people make daily
  • Choose and use foods for good health that are consistent with the Food Guide Pyramid and the 2000 Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
  • Improve practices in food selection, safety, and preparation
  • Enjoy being physically active
  • Grade Levels:

  • Content and activities are appropriate for students in grades 1 - 6
  • Curricular Materials:

  • User-friendly CD containing hundreds of full color, copy ready graphics, lesson plans, handouts, recipes and evaluations necessary to teach each lesson
  • 30 different and complete lessons included on the CD
  • Supplemental material for the Extension Educator's use (sample letters, printable completion certificates, printable Professor Popcorn stickers, and additional web sites)
  • Each lesson contains hands-on educational activities
  • Each lesson contains a different physical activity
  • Each lesson has a different take-home handout
  • Each lesson includes application to the Indiana Department of Education State Curriculum Guide/Academic Standards
