Get some unripe pears, plums, peaches, or avocadoes, and place your moldy
lemon in a paper bag with those fruits. A gas, called ethylene, is released
by the moldy lemon, and it ripens the unripe fruit! Where do you suppose the
saying "One rotten apple spoils the whole barrel" came from? Do your
findings support this saying?
The rotten apple releases more ethylene gas, causing the rest of the apples
in the barrel to ripen faster than usual, meaning they also will rot faster
than usual.
