Campus County Connection

Volume XXVI  Edition VIII       August 2009

The 2009 county fair season is coming to a close and so has the event that affords us and the 4-H Youth Development Program the opportunity to showcase the fruits of 4-H members’ labors. In many counties, the county fair is the single, largest event that brings together the many facets and populations of the community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you, your local support staff and volunteers for the efforts that collectively make a 4-H display and/or county fair possible. Most folks find it hard to believe that this is something we work on year around. I have often thought that there are many who think we wave a magic wand and make everything appear, and thank goodness there are others who are willing to utilize vacation time from work to be by our side helping to make this happen!

Thanks for all that you do throughout the year to make our programs successful. See you at the State Fair ….. or if our paths don’t cross there …. at our fall retreat in September.

- Renée McKee, State 4-H Program Leader

Fall Youth Staff Retreat
Plans are being finalized for the fall youth staff retreat that will be conducted on September 30/ October 1. Overnight accommodations have been arranged for September 30 only at the University Plaza Hotel (formerly University Inn) in West Lafayette. The phone number for the hotel is 765-463-5511 or 800-777-9808 (please ask for the 4-H Youth Retreat block). If you have special dietary needs, please let Jane Robertson know (robertsonje@purdue.edu) to assist us with meal planning.

Our sessions will convene at the Beck Center on the Purdue University Agronomy Farm with a noon lunch/program on September 30. I hope that everyone has calendared this meeting and that you have enrolled via the staff development website to participate. Please note that this will include an evening session on Wednesday, September 30. Additional details will be available by September 1.

ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

Purdue Exhibits at the 2009 Indiana State Fair
Pioneer Our Land Pavilion
Visitors to the 2009 Indiana State Fair can learn more about themselves, animals, plants, insects and agriculture in a fun setting at the Purdue University Extension exhibits in the Pioneer Our Land Pavilion. A flyer with descriptions of the exhibits is available to download here.

Reception to Honor Mary Frances Smith
You are invited to participate in a reception honoring Mary Frances Smith (1911-2007), a long time 4-H Staff member and 4-H Icon, on August 15 at the 2009 Indiana State Fair.

An exhibit honoring Mary Frances will be placed in the 4-H Exhibit Hall during the entire State Fair. Friends of Mary Frances are invited to gather on August 15 at 9:00 AM at the 4-H Exhibit Hall for the “Cinnamon Roll and Coffee” reception to reminiscence and honor Mary Frances. We know that Mary Frances touched many lives, both youth and adults, in her career and we hope that you will be able to participate as recognition of the role she played in your 4-H career.

Please RSVP to Shelly Bingle-Coffman at sbingle@purdue.edu or phone her at 765-494-8483 by August 10 if you plan to attend.

Looking forward to visiting with 4-H Friends as we honor one of Indiana’s 4-H Icons.

Operation: Military Kids (OMK)
OMK Opportunities and Resources
OMK still has funds available to help with supplies for Hero Packs, activities for children during deployment briefings, and/or county sponsored events. Up to $500 is available per event. Purchases will need to be made by September 10, but the actual project or event can be held after that date. We frequently receive feedback that the project or event was as meaningful to the adult and youth volunteers as it was to the military children. Please give us a call if you know of a group in your community that might interested in doing an OMK community service project.
Download the 2009 OMK County Sponsored Event application and letter.

Mobile Technology Lab
The MTL will be in the 4-H Centennial Hall at the Indiana State Fair, so please let people know of this opportunity to create Hallmark cards and messages for our deployed soldiers. We also want to thank Boone, Gibson, Newton, Pulaski, Vanderburgh, Wabash, and Warrick Counties for providing and assisting with the MTL in their counties in recent months. Steve and Judy would not be able to do this job without all of the fantastic help from Extension Educators and local volunteers!

Registrations, with payment ($10/participant), are due September 18. Registration forms are at the 4-H judging website: www.four-h.purdue.edu/cde/. The WHEP CDE guidelines were revised last year to include an animal identification activity and the oral reasons will be given by teams (rather than individuals). Open teams should use the 4-H/FFA CDE registration form but add an extra box to indicate they are an "Open" team. Open teams will not qualify for the national 4-H and FFA events. The top 4-H team qualifies to attend the National 4-H Wildlife Habitat Evaluation contest. Participants to the national 4-H event must be enrolled in 4-H and aged 14-19.
