Summer Hubbub!
Now
that county livestock enrollment deadlines have come and gone, the phones
have started ringing on campus. It seems like we spend more and more of our
time on this end trying to help local individuals understand the paperwork
deadlines that we each find ourselves dealing with. Please understand that
we do what we can on this end to steer these folks back to you … we really
try to help them understand that there is a process in the local community
(the grievance process) for them to work through issues at the local level.
Just when I think I’ve worked long enough in the extension system to have
heard all of the excuses, I hear a new one!
There is one consistency in all of the calls I have taken and that is that folks just want to feel like they’ve been heard….and the grievance process provides that opportunity. It really doesn’t help any of us to use the line “we have to teach young people a lesson.” As one father told me last week, “even the IRS accepts tax filings late …. You just get to pay the penalty.” I’ve left here more than one evening over the past two weeks thinking about some of the calls I’ve taken, and am left feeling that we have policies regarding late enrollments that range from A to Z. Some counties are very understanding and willing to be accepting, others do so with stipulations, and yet others are governed with an iron fist accepting nothing late, period! (and then there are those who have been iron fisted until it is someone they would like to make a change for but feel that they can’t and use the excuse “if you let one, you have to let them all). I find myself wondering why some counties have been able to be accepting and others so stringent. I don’t have a really good answer to any of this …. Except I know that those of us who serve as professionals in this field need to frequently remind ourselves (and the adults who are working with us) that we should all be focused on the positive development of young people and that young people, (I would suggest, rather than paperwork) should be central in the decisions we make.
