GUIDE FOR

NATIONAL 4-H AUTOMOTIVE CONTEST

 

 

This event is designed to provide 4-Hers of driving age with an educational activity in the 4-H Automotive Program. Participants will have an opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge of auto maintenance and skill of operation. Safety will be stressed throughout the contest.

This contest will include (time limits as shown):

              1. Written Examination (20 minutes)
              2. Parts Identification (5 minutes)
              3. Safety and Maintenance Inspection (5 minutes)
              4. Skill Driving Event (partially timed)

Designated judges will preside over the event and their decisions will be final.

 

Eligibility

In addition to meeting the general eligibility requirements, contestants in the Automotive Contest must also:

1.  Possess and display a valid, unlimited driver's license to drive ALONE during daytime hours.
2.  Have a driving record during the last 12 months that is free of moving violation convictions.

 

Practice Period

A period of time will be allowed before the skill driving event (not more than 4 minutes) to study the layout of the automobile controls and to acquire the "feel of the car." The contestant may not drive through any part of the contest course.

Event No. I - Written Examination

Objective: To evaluate the participants knowledge of the automobile care and safety as explained in the 4-H Automotive project manuals.

Procedure: Participants will complete a written exam of 40 questions taken from 4-H National Automotive Manuals 1, 2, 3, CO608 ("Buying Your First Car"), and CO609 ("Keys to Happy Motoring: You and the Driving Task") of the Automotive project materials.

Rules:

1.  Penalty points will be given for each wrong answer.
2.  Time limit 20 minutes.

Event No. II - Parts Identification

Objective: To evaluate participants communicative skills for identifying parts.

Procedure: Participants will name 10 various parts of an engine or components tagged for identification. (5 minutes)

Event No. III - Safety and Maintenance Inspection

Objective: To measure the ability of the participants to detect unsafe and hazardous conditions on an automobile.

Procedure: Participants will be asked to determine approximately 10 unsafe conditions on a car. (5 minutes)

Event No. IV - Driving Exercise

Objective: To give participants the opportunity to demonstrate their manipulative skills in handling a motor vehicle.

EVENT NO. IV - PARALLEL PARKING

 

Procedure: Contestant will parallel park on the right side of a street. One parking space will be laid out as shown above. Drivers are allowed only one reverse and one forward movement while parking and in leaving parking space. All other changes in direction will cost the driver points. After measurements are recorded, contestant will pull out of parking space and drive to other location.

Procedure: Contestant will drive forward through the serpentine layout passing on left side of first center pole, then back through serpentine, going on opposite sides of center poles.
